My nieces and nephews visit me a lot and they've been asking me if I'm ever going to get a game player. As much as they are on them at home, I wasn't going to get one, but I've reconsidered. They often stay overnight, so it might be nice to let them play for a while before bedtime or while I'm fixing supper.

Are there any that you would recommend?

It depends how often they visit and how much your willing to spend. If you don't want to spend much, buy a Playstation 2. If you want to spend a bit more i'd recommend an Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii.

Hope that helps.

I saw some kids still using Playstation 1. It's an old model of player but very useful for 3-6 years old kids. They can play car racing, ball games, fighting and many more. If you want game players that really give cool features, go for the latest models like Xbox.

Games are specific to the system and can't be used in other systems, right? It seems like some of the games that they are allowed to play at home are very violent. Does one system lean more toward non-violent games than another?

Yes, games are specific to the box. Many games are released that have versions for more than one box.

Yes, the Wii, it is DVD qualilty video where the Xbox360 and PS3 are HD.

The Wii has tons of stuff for kids. Recently one or more "mature" games were released for the Wii. (I believe)

My older grandkids play on the Xbox360. Their parents won't let them watch movies that are less violent. Go figure. I haven't figured out "why sexual content" in games ?? There is another store you go to for that stuff, or so I've heard. :)

I'd like to ask if you meant to say won't let them watch movies that are more violent, but the "go figure" proves that was no mistake or typo about watching movies that are less violent.

When my oldest nephew got his first game, I remember it was Mario Bros. I got so totally hooked on it when I visited them that I decided I'd never get a game system because I would never get anything else done. From the glimpses I've gotten of Mario, he's changed a lot since then and the temptation to play won't be so great.

I participate on a Q&A wiki and some of the questions about games are shocking to me. It seems like they are nothing but violent, sexual, or otherwise not what I think is healthy for kids. Does one system have games that are less violent and less sexual, or even non-violent and non-sexual? What about fun educational games? Are they available and does one system offer more of them than others? Maybe I should pass on the game system and just let them play games directly off the computer.

Playing games through the computer is also what I recommend. Buying a gaming console will make your nephews and nieces become addicted to games. With a personal computer, you can tell them that you need to do something and they can't complain if you want them to stop playing.
