I have a problem with people who call and expect us to pause DVDs indefinitely simply because it's a convenient time for them to be on the phone.

Phone Calls During Movies

I have Caller ID units all over the place which I can read during movies or anything else I'm doing. If it is obviously not a personal call, whether I'm watching a movie or anything else, more often than not, if I am in reach I'll pick it up and hang up so I don't need to hear the additional rings or pre-recorded message or whatever on my answering machine while I'm busy. Those don't result in a call right back. That's probably the majority of calls I'll get. If it is a personal call and I don't want to take it, I'll send an E-Mail to them later indicating sorry I missed your call but I was busy - what's up? That way I've responded and if important they can get back to me.

The good thing with having few friends is that my phone will ring only once in a while and when they call me then that is important. I accept calls even when I'm watching movies but I make sure that I won't interrupt my friends who are watching with me, if there are any.

I usually put my phone on vibrate and then when the movie is done I will see who called. If it's important, usually the person will leave a message and if they don't then they get a return call after the movie is done.
Some of us don't have that option with land lines - vs. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=8sQHZasNuMA

Yes, but you can always unplug the phone from the wall! I don't take calls during movies either, unless I answer and tell them I will call them when the movie is over.

It would take quite a while to do that, I have phones in just about every room (I think I have 5 phones on the main level, 4 upstairs which I could still hear and 4 in the basement, which I could hear as well but to a lesser degree). It would be easier to go into the garage and disconnect the whole line but then I couldn't get a message. It does not ring that much and as noted if it is obviously not a personal call, it is easy to pick it up and hang up. The few times it is a personal call, it is not that big a deal. If I see the number and want to pause and take a minute to listen to the answering machine that is not a big deal. It is more of a big deal to pick it up and have a long conversation that is non important to do at that instant. I always look at new phone, even though I don't use them much (just a gadget person), I have a corded 2 line phone with an answering machine in the office which also has a cordless 2-line phone and you can add expansion handsets. Not that I need another phone, but I do think the expansion handsets are more compact and look nicer than the old 2.4g two line phones I have by the listening chair in the main room and next to the bed (where I could be watching movies too) - not to mention that 5.8g will likely cause less audio interference. So I could end up getting a few new phones if the price is right (i.e. $30 for a 2 line cordless handset). I have not replaced some phones in 8-10 years as it is not a big priority. I think one of the 2.4g phones I have in the basement is about that vintage and cost me about $8. It works fine, but sooner or later will need a battery that will probably cost me more than the phone. So if I can get some something nicer looking and more convenient to place (the expansion handsets don't need to be hooked to a phone line), I'd rather have something nicer looking, newer and with a brand new battery. If something comes along that's better 8-10 years that's OK and if I see a good deal to replace old technology that I've got my money's worth from, all the better.
