We've been using our PS3 as a DVD and Blu-Ray player for quite some time, but now news is trickling out of PS3's wearing out and malfunctioning with too much use. Has this happened to anyone? Other than keeping the machine ventilated, is there anything else I can do to prevent wear from use?

I did this many years ago with one of the first PS' that came out but it was really bad. I am sure the tech has gotten better but honestly I doubt I would attempt it again after having purchased a good player already.

When the PS3 first came out without the first few upgrades, it was blasted by a couple of respected sites for its DVD playback ability but got better after updates. Mine personally does not see tons of use in the secondary basement system. It does burn much more energy than a DVD player as it basically is a computer. Heat can cause issues over time. At some point when I upgrade some stuff in the main system, my Oppo HDMI switch will makes its way down to basement system and my Marantz DV9600 universal player will be used for DVDs in the basement as it is simply a better DVD player. I also may at some point get another Blu-Ray player for the bedroom and the Samsung 2500 Blu-Ray player is also a better DVD player than the PS3. So it is only a matter of time before I upgrade something somewhere that will result in even more limited use of the PS3 for DVD playback. I'd think that games and Blu-Rays would be more demanding on the unit vs. DVDs or CDs in terms of processing power. I have my unit raised a bit (with LAT International vibration controlling feet underneath the PS3 legs that are probably about 3/4 of an inch) so it probably helps too

Perhaps you have just used it too much. I would not use my PS3 or any gaming console to watch DVD's all the time. They are expensive and DVD players are much cheaper. Can you take it and get it looked at somewhere to see what is the problem and what it would cost to get it fixed?

It hasn't worn out or anything just yet; we've just been more hesitant after reading stories from other people who have had the problem. We have a regular DVD player which we have decided to use for all DVD's, but the PS3 remains the only BluRay player we have.

Next months Home Theater Mag once again reviews the PS3 and has awarded it a top pick for BluRay playback
