I bought a Panasonic SC-PT670, but tbh I think the bass is crappy even for the money ($280 w/ tax & shipping from amazon).

The Onkyo HT-S6200 has good reviews but I dont know if it'd actually produce way more bass. I dont need a player; I only want the system for music, but still it'd be nice to have a sound system that easily sets up with a PS3 & samsung plasma for not a dollar more than 600. An ipod/mp3 connection would be nice.

Can i find something *signicantly* better than the panasonic or do I just have to live with unhappy bass quality?

Any suggestions are appreciated :D

Subwoofer: 100W 6" driver freq (45Hz 120Hz, 6 ohms, 1 % Distortion) with a max of 250w@100hz /10% distortion
the downside to a HtiB system It is what it is one must understand that for $280,$600,$800,$1000 for a complete home theater system corners were cut to achieve that price point

with the Onkyo your getting basically the same max power 290 vers 250 your getting a bit more freq response
25hz to 150 and a larger 10" drive so your probably going to get better bass
or you can just keep what you have and upgrade speakers as you see fit starting with getting a real subwoofer
there are numerous good brands out there Paradigm, SVS HSU research av123 build your own sorta parts express etc to name a few.
I would go for a minimum of 10" I use a 15" in my system which can move a decent amount of air with
out stressing the amp
thats my 2cents

thanks for the reply. i'm returning the panasonic, since it wont work with my PS3 (i think) and my PC 5.1 system isn't much worse.

i don't have any good stores nearby to hear system differences, so I'm hoping yall would give me opinions. music is my favorite past time; i want a nice system now, but often times it pays to have patience. at minimum, i want a system that'll rumble my house (the panasonic rumbles my living room). I wish I could own a system that'd rumble my neighbors house :) ... not to be intrusive, but like most of us i really like loud tunes lol

if yall think the onkyo wont shake my house (& probably wont, since gundy pointed out it's not that much bigger), approximately how much would a neighbor's house rumbler system cost? i'm not really thinkin on the lines of "home theater"; I just want it for music, so maybe there's a way to custom build a system for less and get more since it wouldn't need all the "home theater" hook ups like HDMI and stuff.

sorry my post is poorly written, random thoughts; plus i dont know anything about sound systems yet.

My cousin just fell for the "Buy a guitar in a box starter kit" and I gotta say, the little I know about music I know he was shafted. That Dayton does not look too bad for what it comes with and knocking off 100USD is not a bad idea either, might get more sales that way compared to the local shop prices.

thanks for the suggestion phil!

im up for anything; i just want to be pleased by my system. that setup says 12", 150 watt sub. the sub is bigger yet less wattage; so i'm wondering if it'd actually produce more/equal/less bass than say a 10" with 290 watts. i see lots of 12" subs that are $1,000 and same/less wattage as other speakers; given they probably have quality parts & better quality sound, but do they actually produce more bass?

maybe i should just find some articles lol; so hard though, google is full of crap now. so many articles that are just plain retarded!

I agree with you that Google has become crappy because all they care is about the money and not really the content of the website. Anyway, I'm glad that you have found this forum. There is one thing that I like in this forum and that is "ask and you shall be answered". I hope you will stay here for a long time and enjoy the knowledge you will get from here.

thanks for replies everyone.

I read some articles but they are just complete basics that have no help for actually deciding on which receivers, which subs, which speakers, it's all just "a sub is for bass." bullcrap lol.

The PS3/flat screen i have isn't even mine and the owner will be taking it in a couple months. I dont plan to ever buy one either. All I really want the system for is superb music. I've been trying to begin building a custom system, but there's so many factors it's basically shooting in the dark for a noob.

I don't want anyone to waste their time shopping for me, but if you already know a great setup and will only take a few minutes to gather together, please suggest it :)

I know $600 wont go far, but i'd save more if it was truly worth it. It'd be really neat if the system was upgradeable; like use 5.1 for awhile and eventually do 7.2

would something lke http://www.amazon.co...6107426&sr=1-14 shake the neighbors house too? lol

Here is a little info on subs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subwoofer

You're really not going to get superb music from a HT in a box system. It is designed at a price point for HT. The room you have it in and its qualities impact the sound and the bass. You an also always look at audiogon.com (videogon.com too) or craigslist.com for locals selling things. Sometimes you can get a good deal and stretch the dollars a bit. Also you can go look at it and bring some of your own music.

If you are mostly interested in music, why not a good decent 2.1 system with a receiver instead. Your 600 dollar budget could go pretty far in that field, particularly if you shop used.

You could start with a AVReciever and 3 speakers left right and a sub or get a small setup if your a gamer your not going to be happy with just a stereo system setup since all games are in Dolby digital or DTS
outfits like av123 occasionally run specials
while this system is a bit more than you wanted to spend it's worth a look
ELT MFW 15 Combo My boss has a pair of MFW 15's in his system
If you go the first route then later on be sure add more speakers from the same Brand or size, set catagorie
Numerous websites that only sell over the net do have a try before you buy policy
Sites like av123,hsuresearch,svsound,perionaudio, and possibly outlaw audio

for an 18" these specs are kind of wack frequency response of 38Hz to 500Hz you do not need 500hz out of a sub unless your other speakers are tenie tiny ones 150 tops is fine and on the low side lower is better plus because it is passive you will then have to buy a dedicated amp for it.
Sure the price looks appealing but I think the above info is pretty much saying im not that great and i'm on clearance :) 38 to 40 I'd expect from a 6or 8" driver from an 18 it better dip into the low teens.
Thinking about it those specs are screaming musical intrument bass but not sub bass

I've not bought anything from them yet but at some point down the road I might grab one of their Onkyo rec'rs with height channels for the secondary basement system. We have a local chain that has been in business for 55 years and is going out of business and if they have anything left towards the end I might pick up speakers just to have. They carry B&W and if I can pick up something that sonically matches the front if they have something left I probably will. Their sale just started but they anticipate going out in less than 60 days (and they have multiple stores) and from what I saw in one the other day, I think they will pretty much have everything gone in their target time frame. It's just a question of whether what they have left. If not there's always Audiogon, Videogon and Craigslist down the road.

hmm been awhile lol; my truck broke & cost $750 to fix so I had to put a hold on this...still have more to fix too :(

anyway, i figured since i'll be moving out of my house in a few months that it'd be nice to buy a car system, install it in my house, and when i sell my house i'll buy the car i want

so I came up with:

Kicker Subwoofer: http://www.amazon.co...67396369&sr=1-7
Two Kicker 6"x9": http://www.amazon.co...67396461&sr=1-2
Two Kicker 6.5": http://www.amazon.co...67396325&sr=1-1
Receiver: http://www.amazon.co...67396607&sr=1-1
Amplifier: http://www.amazon.co...67396736&sr=1-2

I plan to get a malibu, which has those speaker sizes i think. From what ive read i'll also need a capacitor otherwise my sub wont hit as hard and my lights will probably dim.

Totals $965, plus capacitor, home powering system and wiring

Anyways... the real obstacle is figuring out a good way to power it in the house. Any ideas?

There are AC power supplies you can get but for the price of them you can easily buy a new or even a high quality used home amplifier. I'd guess you are probably talking a minimum $400 for something that won't be of much value unless you want to play your car stuff in the house again. For that kind of money you can buy used stuff on Audiogon or even authorized factory refurbs (with an extended warranty available) at accessories4less.com.
