What happened to Mitsubishi? I really haven't been able to buy any new electronics for several years, but this year, I'm going to be getting some equipment. The last time I went shopping, Mitsubishi is a big name in it all. In fact, I bought some of their top of the line units. Have they been surpassed? Merged? What?
Is it really you, George?

They are still around. They do DLP - http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/ They are a very big company that makes lots of products. The flat screens (and projectors) are the rage now vs. some other things. I like their DLPs. They way I have my TVs in my systems now it is not a good fit. A couple of friends have models that are about 3 years old and still look great (one had the TV calibrated).

Plus they are making automotives as well. My father told me once that companies are not always sticking to their own products with regards to the parts inside their appliances. To prove his theory, we opened up an old National-Panasonic TV and found there parts from Mitsubishi and Samsung.
I guess that even though Mitsubishi is not as popular as the others, they could be found in the parts of the appliances we are using.

Rebadging of products or parts thereof is old - The Lexicon Blu-Ray Player is an Oppo BDP-83 and they paid to obtain THX certification and have a custom metal case for it. Cost of the Lexicon - $3,500. Cost of the Oppo - $500. Any benefits from the better Lexicon casing can probably be accomplished with a Bright Star Audio Little Rock (I have one on top of my modded Oppo unit - pic below) or even a telephone book. Certainly in my opinion not worth the $3k difference. I understand the Lexicon universal player before the current one (RT-20) was based on a Marantz DV9500 (which itself was based on a Pioneer) with some slight mods and a list price of $2,900 more and the Lexicon universal before that (RT-10) was based on a Pioneer with a higher cost and probably not something I would consider worthwhile based on the price difference. Almost all the LD players made were Pioneer clones (if not all of them). Mitsubishi makes a lot of things from electronics to glass. My old Jeep (last generation made by AMC before Chrysler bought them) had Ford glass, a GMC stalk on the steering wheel and part of the transmission was Mercedes.

Here's a story about a unit of Mitsubishi involving a deal with Pioneer. It may end up working it's way into TV technology too.

Thanks for the information Phil. I wonder what Mitsubishi and Pioneer will come up with. From the article, it was stated that OLED is not easy to make and it will have some defects after the product is finished. Well, we just have to wait for it though because these 2 companies are currently researching on this technology.
